Spotted! Siti Khatijah

A multi-disciplinary artist, Siti Khatijah is a third year student in Nanyang Academy Of Fine Arts majoring in Fine Arts Photography. She shot her first event in 2008 for the UOB Home Party. She then went on to exhibit her series of work entitled ‘A Light Conversation’, along with her fellow schoolmates, at the Goethe Institute in 2009 for the Kai Olaf workshop. Siti is currently working on her graduation show, which will be held at the Nanyang Gallery.

Siti’s work -titled Secretly I M- is part of the Upfront exhibition currently showing at the 2902 gallery. “The series seeks to reveal the true nature of a born identity of three young men who cross-dress and believe otherwise about their identity,” she explains. “Each of them finds a path of solace in being more feminine and finds a more sensitive connection and love in being who they wish to be. In portraying themselves as women, they not only create a different character for themselves but a different perspective of a gender identity, which draws much scrutiny even in society today. Each of them harnesses a desire, whilst considering themselves ‘stuck’ in a generic body. Beneath the layers of clothing, they still exude femininity and as I feel, ‘they are more than a woman can be’.”

Upfront remains at 2902 gallery through 17 April.
