Little Man Arrives

Little Man sees the world differently. He looks up at everything through eyes that are perfectly positioned to give a unique perspective. These inquisitive eyes allow him to see the interesting details that others, might miss.

Little Man takes his discoveries and becomes a curator of things. Special things others might overlook. The collection is always evolving: from luxury clothing to art to home accessories and any other well thought out oddity in between. Initial offerings include curated pieces from designers and brands such as Silas & Maria, Aiste Nesterovaite, Hayden Harnett, Obey, A For Apple, HAY Furniture, RAEN Optics, Popaganda and Traveler’s Notebook to name a few.

In this eclectic collection there is one common thread – thoughtful design that allows you to see objects in a way you never did. And that’s the reason why Little Man isn’t just a store. It’s a new way of seeing, all that surrounds you.

Conceived by owners Ian Yeo and founder and designer Alicia Ong, the idea stemmed from the duo’s passion in art, music, street culture and design. The store also carries the full collection of Alicia’s eponymous label – AL&ALICIA® – as well as special projects and collaborations by the duo.

Little Man invites everyone who share the same appreciation for thoughtful design and quality work to come into the store to inspire, and be inspired.

Spotted! Salad Days

Salad days was first coined by Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, with her making references to her inexperience and youthful days. In this modern day, Salad days refers to a person’s heyday when somebody is at the peak of his/her abilities—not necessarily in that person’s youth.

It all began a year ago, while at their usual lunch date in the heart of the Central Business District, it became apparent to two good friends Doranne Loke and Michelle Phng- that there was a lack of good quality, affordable work wear available. They decided to take things into their own hands, by custom making their own work wear. As the dresses were an immediate hit, they decided to fill the gap in the market by founding SALAD DAYS.

“Targeted at the fashion and quality conscious working woman, SALAD DAYS brings to you timeless pieces with a versatile flair, that will take you straight from the meeting to the after work cocktails,” the girls explain. “Fabrics are handpicked and complemented with solid workmanship, creating dresses that will brighten your days from 9-9!”

Spotted! Kevin Choe

Kevin Choe spent most of his growing up years living abroad in Bangkok and the US. Upon his return to Singapore, he found himself having to reacquaint with the country that seemed all so different, yet vaguely familiar. In that process of searching and re-acquaintance, he found himself uncovering unique aspects of the country that defined Singaporeans. Four years and two jobs later, LOVE SG was born.

Kevin continues: “Our goal is simple – to create locally-inspired products ‘Singaporean’ enough to bring back as a souvenir yet fun enough to use, even right here in Singapore. LOVE SG is about goods with Singapore-centric designs, drawing inspiration from all things in our backyard which give our country its distinct identity, be it intriguing laws which may seem peculiar to outsiders, or local lingo which leaves foreigners scratching their heads. Designed locally, we like to incorporate a quirky part of Singapore into each item, representing our approach to the conventional idea of the ubiquitous souvenir: fun, inspiring and slightly surprising.”

LOVE SG sells online and at the Esplanade Shop. Their range of goods includes T-shirts, notebooks, badges and luggage tags.

9Fountains, eStore+Design Community

9fountains.com is Singapore’s premier on-line t-shirt store and design community–a community of like-minded individuals aspiring to elevate design in Singapore and the rest of South-east Asia.

The platform gives designers the opportunity to submit artwork to monthly online t-shirt competitions. All t-shirt lovers are invited to participate in the community and vote on designs. If a design receives enough votes, 9fountains awards the artist a cash prize and print the design on t-shirts which are then sold on-line. In addition to the up-front cash prize, artists are also given a cash commission for each shirt sold and full credit for their work.

Mr Andrew Wolf, a director of 9 Fountains continues: “We’re also going to hand out editor’s and guest designers’ awards to recognise outstanding designers who may not have won the general public competition. So we’re trying our best to really give designers every opportunity to succeed and stand out amidst the growing design community in Singapore.”

For the website’s official launch, the works of 15 Singapore-based graphic designers and artists, known as the 9 Fountains Founding 15, have been printed onto T-shirts. Click here to check them out.

Spotted! Playground Pins

Conceived by Antoinette Wong and Stanley Tan -the little dröm store-, these Playground Pins are fashioned after old school mosaic playgrounds. “The playground was our school, our imagination, our friend; life lessons were learnt through bruises gathered from knocking against colourful mosaic tiles, by scraping our knees falling on gritty sandpits, the feeling of sand between our toes. It is an irony and pity that such innocent and spontaneous play-time is fading away as today’s society gets increasingly “safe” and “protected”. The architecture of these nostalgic playgrounds ultimately stands as public art installations – and even these are gradually disappearing from the Singapore landscape.”

Pop by the the little dröm store to pick up your favorite design, or get one online from their webshop.

Retro Shopping at Five Stones Vintage

20-something E is a vintage lover and connoisseur, and a believer in reliving the past. She is also the owner of Five Stones Vintage, an e-store which will leave vintage fans in a state of quivering excitement.

“In this age of mass production and consumption, vintage clothing and accessories from decades past have a special place in my heart because they are almost always OOAK (one of a kind), with a past life and a story,” E explains. “Items for sale are sourced from around the world. I love the idea of peddling one off items that allow people to express their personalities and individual styles and break away from the cookie cutter norm. “Go green, wear vintage!” is our tagline and we hope that by providing fashion forward vintage pieces, we can also do our part to help save the Earth.”

In sum, E likes to turn back time.

Culturepush readers get a $5 rebate for purchases over $45 (excludes shipping). Simply email E after payment with the mention of ‘Culturepush’ for the refund. Offer is valid till 31 October 2010.
