I’ve been meaning to post up reckless ericka’s wicked cool designs for a little while now. Pictured is a look from their first collection, “Brit Kid goes to India”, featuring cut-out tops, layered cropped jackets, Union-Jack inspired multi-wearable garments, silk-screened leggings and a mad mix of checked outfits with turban-like headgear and zany accessories.
“It is a mish-mash of multi-layering and colors, fusing the spirit of naturalness and grunginess,” Afton explains. “Playing with tactile qualities and cut, the tailored jackets, draped tops, and layered silhouette, emphasizes the beautiful facets of the human body. Though adaptable to whomever wears our collection, it bears our strong and impertinent style.”

I recently came across 20-year-old Leong Minyi’s collection of utterly feminine frocks in muted oranges and subtle nudes. “The designs are from my 2008 graduation collection entitled Back To Nature,” Minyi beams. “The collection landed me second prize at the graduation show and a short feature in the Urban section of The Straits Times.”
Minyi takes an interesting approach to her collection by infusing her love for Andy Goldsworthy’s work and her love for nature. Minyi explains: “Andy Goldsworthy is a sculptor of land art, a photographer and an environmentalist. I wanted to make something that was fluid and soft. So I draped, pleated and dyed the fabrics -like stretch net and chiffon- to create textures that are reminiscent of Andy’s work and highly reflective of nature.”
Minyi is currently pursuing a BA (Hons) Fashion Design at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. “My philosophy is to design garments which make a woman feel beautiful, free and easy,” she says. “The designs, at a glance, may seem conventional. However, on closer inspection of the details of the designs and fabrics, one will find new discoveries within the garments. I like to create textures on fabrics, either through heat treatment, embroidery, felting or dyeing. I think it’s all in the details.”

Malaysian-bred designer Sabrina Goh first entered the public eye with her collections at the Singapore Designer Contests 2006 and 2007. She is now at the helm of her own fashion label, ELOHIM.
“ELOHIM meaning Jehovah, God of creative, is a strong motivation for me to do my collections,” Sabrina explains. “I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts in 2005. During that time, I was an intern stylist at Mediacorp Singapore. After graduation, I worked for a few local fashion brands. Later on, I joined SINO LONDON as an in house Fashion Designer.”

I have an insanely high drool-factor for Afton Chan’s collections, particularly on the men’s side. Afton is a recent graduate of The Raffles Design Institute with a B.Des. Fashion Design (Best Collection).
At just 21-years-old, Afton is now designing a capsule collection under the mentorship of Desmond Yang (Abyzz). “The collection consists of draped garments, pants with interesting silhouettes, as well as pieces that can be worn in more than one way,” she adds.

Straightforward and subtle lines and unexpected details, have launched Li Xian’s Constructivism-inspired creations into the display space of the new-shop-on-the-block, Blackmarket.
“Inspired by Russian Avant Garde, my graduation collection takes cues from the curvilinear sculptural forms, to create designs with folds and interceptions at the most unexpected places,” Xian explains.
The 20-year old is a fresh off graduate from Temasek Poly, with a diploma in Apparel Design and Merchandising. “I am also a self-taught illustrator,” she adds. “Illustrating and doodling allow me to record what I see every day.”

One of the finalists of a recent Crowning Stroke competition was 22-year old Tony Chew. Tony put together a design titled ‘Propaganda Is The Message‘, incorporating the characters designed under his moniker All Hail Neuveville, and touching largely on social and political issues.
“The design combines my passion for street art and my interest in social and political happenings,” Tony says. “I certainly hope my future works could follow in the footsteps of Banksy, Obey and other street artists that I respect.”

The Raffles Design Institute recently announced 18-year old Vicky Zhu as the winner of Best Fashion Collection. Vicky, who finished her BA (Hons) in Fashion, presented half a dozen looks from her men’s collection, which was inspired by Arbosculpture.
Vicky explains: “Arborsculpture is the art and technique of growing and shaping woody trunks. By grafting, the tissues of one plant are affixed to the tissue of another plant. Although grafting usually refers to joining two plants, it may be a combination of several plants. Human power forces the plant to grow into ornamental shapes. My collection re-interprets the process of grafting, giving everyday outfits a new look.”
