Artist Ian Tee impressed the judges at this year’s Cliftons Art Prize competition with DIFFERENT SENSE, an artwork from his Destroyed Metal Paintings series.

“The series fuses the meditative practice of Zen calligraphy with the visceral expressivity of heavy metal music,” Ian explains. “The works are composed of layers of marks where I replace the traditional ink and brush with an angle grinder. Tones of chiaroscuro are made by scratching, distressing and slashing the surface – to the effect of creating a sense of space and depth. They are permanent gestures which juxtapose destructive aggression and a practice of mindfulness.”

The Cliftons Art Prize Exhibition Singapore runs until 15 December. Check it out!
