Spotted! Melissa Ngein

Last month I was scrolling through Instagram and found an account named melissadraws. The account belongs to Melissa Ngein, a Bachelor (Hons) Fine Arts from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in partnership with Loughborough University.

Using a pen, Melissa creates delicate and intricate drawings which depict her fascination with zoological studies. “Drawings were always the most straightforward method for me to express what I want to pen down. I draw my works with different strokes, textures and layers. It started out simply with an interest for animals. I illustrated animals’ bones and skulls, hoping to achieve likeness to the illustrations seen in old encyclopedias. I strive to attain a high degree of realism in my practice.”

In her more recent work, Melissa draws dead animals surrounded by living plants. “The whole idea was to introduce the beauty of death. Death can be a beginning to another life, death can also be leaving memories and a form of strength to those that still live.”
