Chiang Yu Xiang’s Fabulously Felted Portraits

Now we’re a little late to the party with Chiang Yu Xiang’s (@pinkocera) Fabulously Felted Portraits workshop (top image) that happened at library@orchard last month, but when a project is this cool, it’s only fair to give it a shout out on our site.

“It started as an experiment with felt to create portraits in two dimension, since I was working with it quite extensively already at that point in time. For the portraits at the OIC portraits day (images 2 & 3) it was all about the stitches as I had only 20 mins between sitters, and the brief was to capture their facial features and their expressions in simplified form. As I went along, I started to sew high relief portraits of pop culture characters on canvas as facial expressions can be emphasized in 3 dimensions (last two images).”
