GOINGHOME with Carrie Wong

Carrie Wong is a fresh grad from LASALLE College of the Arts with a BA (Hons) in Design Communication. The girl is Malaysian and grew up in Brunei before moving to Singapore three years ago. This is all very confusing especially since Carrie’s bachelor’s thesis – GOINGHOME.SG – is entirely based on nostalgic Singaporean experiences and memories. And as far as I’m concerned, Carrie has done an excellent job of illustrating that; from palpable illustrations of mama shops and childhood tidbits to images of void deck activities and old playgrounds, you can almost feel and taste what it was like to be Singaporean in the 80’s and 90’s.

“I looked into globalisation and its impact on the national identity of Singapore, and with that I started to explore different ways to strengthen and foster a solid Singaporean identity through communication design. I decided to focus on the yesteryear of the nation, as I felt that it brought out the best of Singaporean culture and tradition. These years saw the nation’s rapid development, but before the heavy influence of globalisation.”

“Some people were surprised to find out that I’m not a local, and honestly I used to think that Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore are not that much different. It’s true that we are similar in many ways, but there are many practices, traditions, slang and games which are unique to Singapore. Most of the ’tiny events’ and memories in GOINGHOME.SG were collected through interviewing local friends and lecturers around me. In my opinion, these are the valuable experiences and memories which collectively built the national identity of Singapore.”
