There is something chortle-inducing about Soh Hui Yun‘s FATSHELL series that goes a little like this – illustrations riddled with the exploration of Chinese traditions and superstitions, and grappling with the innermost thoughts, problems and emotions of a 21-year-old.
Hui Yun, also known as Wing, is about to graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with a Diploma in Illustration Design. “Currently into sculpting and printmaking, I hope my illustrations can be viewed and observed in another form or dimension, not just on paper. I am inspired by my surroundings, my beliefs, myths, traditions, and illustrators like Mcbess, Nychos or Steven Harrington. My works are quirky and grotesque, mixed with my obsessions to complement the weird image. To me, having extra eyes, bouncy fats, long arms with short fingers enhance my characters … like how some people consider tattoos as a beauty booster.”
