Spotted! Lee Rui Xiang

Superheroes and fictional icons kick ass in Rui Xiang‘s portfolio. RX is a fresh grad from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts whose work is greatly influenced by film and contemporary youth culture reflecting human behavior. He occasionally draws from movies and themes such as the “misguided role models” which hint at popular themes from mass media and pop culture, building his own unique iconography, often controversial and always engaging.

“I am very much interested in the aftermath of the film,  invoking the possibilities of what might have occurred next. I use contemporary film dialogue to create a humorous and provoking story. I combine a loose and rudimentary kind of Cinéma vérité which hints at infinite possibilities of what could have happened next.”

Brace yourself for more of the man’s achingly cool work at the Pulse exhibition which opens on Friday and runs through 19 November at the Maya gallery.
