Acoustic Anarchy

Mark Ong, also known as SBTG, needs little introduction. Renowned worldwide for being a sneaker artist, he has commissioned designs for Nike, DC Shoes and New Balance and was recently was listed in Complex Magazine as one of ’50 Most Influential People in Sneaker History’.

Branching out from the world of sneaker customization, he and his wife Sue (Mr & Mrs Sabotage) have just released an art show titled ‘Acoustic Anarchy’. He tells us more about the show:

Why did you decide to do a solo show?

Well, for the past 10 years, I’ve been using sneakers as a medium to express myself and as that body of work started to develop throughout the years, the sneakers could no longer contain what I wanted to express. So after 10 years, Mrs Sabotage and myself decided to just pour it all out. The result is this body of work, titled ‘Acoustic Anarchy’.

Why did you call the show ‘Acoustic Anarchy’?

I always have had a yin yang approach to naming my work and since this show is inspired by music, I decided to call it Acoustic Anarchy. It also captures the visual side of our musical influences.

What have been your inspirations when putting together this show?

The Misfits, horror movies, Vietnam War, Apocalypse Now, camouflage, punk rock and skateboarding cultures.

Can you explain your fascination with the film Apocalypse now as it features heavily in many of your works?

I guess I am very attracted to it visually as I have an obsession with the tiger camouflage that was the main uniform in the film. Also, it was released in the year 1979, which is the year I was born.

So what are your favourite moments from the film?

I love the scene when Kilgore stands at the battle field without a care of the bombs exploding around him – pink and yellow smoke everywhere and he just says, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning…smells like…victory.” Also the opening sequence where there is the sound of helicopters and then it fades to a ceiling fan with Martin Sheen staring at it. Plus I like how The Doors’ “The End” is playing when the forest explodes. The whole film is such a work of art.

What’s next in the pipeline for Sabotage?

Acoustic Anarchy is the start of what Sabotage is going to bang out, as visual arts will continue as an expression of Mr & Mrs Sabotage for the next 10 years. We are planning to have a show in Manila in January and Paris sometime next year.

Acoustic Anarchy is running from now till 9 September at Unit 13, Lorong 24A Geylang, Click here for more details.
