Spotted! Ong Kian Peng aka Bin

Bin is another recipient of this year’s DesignSingapore Scholarship. The 30-year-old graduated from LASALLE with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Interactive Art in 2009, and has a Masters of Fine Arts in Design (Media Arts) from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He is also the co-founder and creative director of the audiovisual collective, PMP, which looks at experimental audiovisual synthesis in performance.  They were involved in the M1 Fringe Festival in 2011.  More recently, he was selected as the first recipient of Substation’s Open Call for Sound Art.

Bin feels that designing an experience which integrates interactive media, art, graphic design and product design is important.  He has bagged several design awards, including the Silver Award for Experimental Interactive at the 2009 Crowbar Awards; Finalist Award for Interactive Installation Category at Aniwow! China in 2009; and a Jury Recommendation Award for Interactive Arts at the 2009 Japan Media Arts Festival.

He is also very passionate about visualisation, computational design and audiovisual works and he believes that programming is not just for programmers and it can be a very liberating creative tool for designers.

The featured project –Generative Typographies– is a self initiated work in progress that explores the use of a generative process in creating typographic visuals. “This project is all about experimentation and it tries to create interesting patterns out of a typography landscape,” Bin explains. “The core of the idea are points that form the actual typeface, which can be connected in various ways to one another or using the points as a reference, attach different shapes to form new typography landscape. While the end result is obviously very visual in nature, the aim of this project is not just this visuality but also to create a software that allows non-programmers to explore generative means of creating typographic visuals.”
