Spotted! Simon Cheng Joo

Born in Singapore in 1973, Simon Cheng Joo spent his  formative years in LASALLE, College of the Arts; majoring in Fine Arts. In his final year, Simon was awarded and sent to Paris for an exchange programme for three months where he explored and found inspiration through other cultures.

In 2001, he founded Flux Fotography where he branched out to commercial photography and work with major Ad agencies and Design Houses in Singapore. Simon is also represented in New York by Michael Ash Partners due to strong representation of his Polaroid works.

“I work spontaneoulsy with polaroids and shoot them with medium format Cameras. I believe it is not about scientific precision but capturing a certain mood, spirit and atmosphere with the daily spaces and mundane everyday objects. Shooting in this intangible style can be challenging but all the more rewarding,” Simon explains. “I compose and orchestrate my images, not just pretty images but more importantly to evoke thoughts and emotion to my audience. Polaroid portrays a surreal, soft and subtle feel but also melancholic. It blurs the line between fiction and reality where nothing comes close to it.”
