INCH CHUA’S 9837 MILES TO TEXAS

Being the first Singapore female singersongwriter to be invited to the prestigious South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival, this will undoubtedly be Inch Chua’s biggest platform to perform to date. However, the road to Austin, Texas is fraught with difficulties as she faces the uphill task of raising the funds to undertake the trip. The amount required for the trip is huge for a struggling performer. It is very heartwarming that her friends and peers in the Singapore independent rock scene have bandied around to help her cause. Bands performing genres as diverse as post-hardcore to indie rock will come together to perform a special acoustic show in support of Inch and her dream of performing at the SXSW Festival. Acts like A Vacant Affair, BQuartet, Caracal, Plainsunset and more will be taking a break from their usual boisterous rock’n'roll to showcase a gentler side of their music. 5 Feb at 15 Minutes Café, La Salle College of the Arts.   • FIRST SOUND ART PERFORMANCE

    On March 18, Singapore artist Yeo Shih Yun and Danish artist Rune Søchting will present a screening of their very first artistic collaboration. During a short and intense collaboration, they have developed a piece based on the investigation of sound and the moving image.In the work they explore the intermediary space between visuality and aurality playing with the idea of the musical score not as a fixed set of symbols, but as a dynamic and chance-generating system. This will be a unique opportunity to experience the premier screening. 18 March, 4:30 pm at LASALLE, College of the Arts.

  • 10 YEARS OF WORK FOR EVERY MINUTE ON STAGE

    Msxi’s first solo exhibition, curated by Mr. Terence Yeung, showcases a newly completed series that has never been seen before; an outright documentation of: failure, process, training, suffering, bruising, determination and a toast to “the beginner’s spirit”. Serving as a reminder that success never comes easy and it is the journey that is truly more important. This is a series seeking to encourage all who are in difficulty and those that trudge the tough road. Exhibition Days runs 2nd April to 15th April 2010, 12noon to 8.30pm daily at Old School, The Art Studio, 11B Mount Sophia. Opening Reception on 1st April, 7.30pm, with kickass music By Adrian Wee (Poptart / Butter Factory) and loads of Free Beer.

  • ARTIST TALK @ NAFA: BILLY SOH

    Billy Soh is a photographer who practices in portraiture, food styling and photography as well as fine arts photography. Graduated with a Diploma in Visual Communication in Photography from Temasek Polytechnic, he is currently a freelance photographer doing mainly commissioned works. Billy was associated with various photographic collectives and art groups and has been independent since 2006 and is based in Singapore. Currently he volunteers with the Singapore Contemporary Young Artists Project in the areas of Photography and New Media. Join Billy on a retrospective journey of digital photography as he investigates the vulnerability and fragility of pictures and photographs in the face of new imaging technologies. 19 Mar, 13:00-15:00 at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts 1, Wing B, Room. 3-08.

  • SONG IN FILMS BY ERIC KHOO

    This is an illustrative performance by Kevin Mathews, a Singaporean singer-songwriter, perhaps best known for his #1 hit song, “My One & Only” with Watchmen in 1993. Mathews has released four albums and three EPs with Watchmen, The Crowd and Popland respectively. In addition, Mathews is an accomplished film score writer, and has composed music for all of acclaimed director Eric Khoo’s feature films viz. Mee Pok Man, 12 Storeys, Be With Me & My Magic. Mathews has also contributed music to other films like Stories About Love, One Leg Kicking, Invisible Children, Lucky 7, Anita's Complaint and The Carrot Cake Conversations as well as TV series such as Drive and Seventh Month. Mathews will through song performance and clips from the above films, illustrate the songwriting process for songs in films. He will also share the stories behind the creation of the scores of these various films. 17 March, 12:45 - 13:45 at Nanyang Technological University, LT19 (Academic Complex North, Block N2 Level B1). Admission is FREE.
