Justin Lin aka justimite holds an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma from the Anglo-Chinese School Independent. In 2007, he was top student Higher Level Visual Arts.
His nature is to obsess over truth, to decompose, dissect, observe and reconstruct objects and ideas and impose alternative views on what we see. “In my work I seek to show what should be shown, things that are often veiled,” Justin adds. “I like to examine the way we view truth and the thought processes that take place when we choose to accept what we see as truth. I adore interplays of transparency and opacity, both in the visual and conceptual sense, and I often employ its qualities in my work to warp the sense of sight.”

Opening on November 20 at The Arts House is ‘Unnatural Beauty’, a visual installation exhibition that presents art forms constructed from biodegradable cutlery made from cornstarch.
Through design, these neglected everyday objects are transformed into visually stunning art. A single structure is made of 11,000 pieces of forks and spoons – the estimated disposed waste generated in a high traffic food court and fast food restaurant during the lunch hour. In many developed countries where trash is disposed off in an efficient manner, consumers often do not see the amount of waste generated by their consumption habits. By creating form from number, the exhibition unveils the visual impact of waste generated.
In 2008, plastic waste in Singapore alone reaches 684,400 tonnes. This is equivalent to 2,473 Airbus A380 carriers, with disposable plastic cutlery, plastic bags and styrofoam boxes forming a significant bulk of the plastic waste. Disposable plastic cutlery and styrofoam boxes can take an estimated 900 years to break down in a landfill.
The exhibition encourages the audience to rethink their role in creating a sustainable future and to undo undesirable consumption habits. By engaging the audience and creating a stronger awareness of the dire state of global waste pollution, we hope to motivate each individual into making a commitment to create less waste. All materials used in the exhibition will be cleaned and reused to avoid wastage.
Unnatural Beauty is an independently curated exhibition by Trine Design Associates, In conjunction with the Singapore Design Festival 2009. The installation will be on display at The Arts House, Outdoor Foyer, through 4 December. Admission is free.

PIXELPASTRY x TRIBAL DDB present ‘A Void Experience‘, an exhibition that observes mainstream asocial behaviour of HDB residents in Singapore through a multi-sensory experience. It showcases the absence of communication between neighbours who brush past each other at void decks, inside lifts, or along corridors; whereby any kind of acknowledgment towards one another seems to demand effort. Using the void deck of a HDB flat in Buangkok as a showcase platform, the exhibition brings forth a social controversy to light – to expose the emotions suppressed beneath the void of our lives. 27 Nov-6 Dec at Compassvale Link, Block 277 C. 09am-11pm daily. Free Admission.

Launching today is Priscilla Tan’s debut collection, Miss Dotti Bow. Priscilla graduated with a degree in Fashion Marketing from Huddersfield University, and holds a diploma in Fashion Design from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
Her collection -released under the Chalk label- is all about Miss Dotti Bow, an imagery character, whose favorite childhood memory was of the day when she was playing with her dolls, and quite accidentally stumbled upon a box brimming with colorful ribbons, novelty trimmings, and cheerful polka dot fabrics. “That is when I decided to dress in pretty clothes, exactly like my dolls, and started styling and creating my own looks,” Priscilla adds.
Each collection comes with a limited range of stationery that complements the collection and is individually handmade with love.
Chalk designs are stocked at Soon Lee, 56 Haji Lane Level 2.

What do you get when you release 15 accomplished industrial designers from their strict corporate guidelines; and give them permission to “design anything they want”?
To find out, visit the “Small Thoughts, Big Ideas” exhibition, held at The Arts House, from 21-29th November.
Known as The Little Thoughts Group, the participating designers are practicing professionals, working for electronic, automotive, computer, furniture, sports and other companies – in Singapore as well as various parts of Asia. Their work is the expression of their different backgrounds and deeply personal perspectives. And the exhibition was conceptualized as a look into a designer’s mind when he’s not at his day job!
From electrical appliances to furniture; from decorative ornaments to fascinating gadgets, the work on display includes experimental installations and even ideas that never saw the light of day – concepts in the form of models, idea sketches and art-work. Every design has an engaging story. Some are fascinating, some moving, some inspiring, some simply amusing.
