Exhibition: These Things Must Be Done To Get Along In Life

These Things Must Be Done To Get Along In Life is an art show which considers human agency in the rhythm and structures of daily life.

Based on the premise that all action is socioculturally mediated, this exhibition hones in at the intersection of human agency and structure, structure being primarily expressed as the things people do in a regularised and institutionalised way.

Works by Kirsten Tan, Sha Najak, Tan Wee Lit and Vertical Submarine reflect on the ways individuals, resist, reshape, and reproduce these structures in their lives.

The show is presented with the support of City Developments Limited and National Arts Council.

Dates:

9 – 23 December at the Show Room, Post-Museum

Artist Talks:

• Tan Wee Lit at 8pm on 11 December 2009
• Sha Najak & Project X at 8pm on 18 December 2009 (admission by RSVP only to thesethingsmustbedone@gmail.com)

Herman Salleh aka Herms Herman, recently earned his Hons Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts.

He is also one of three cherry-picked young artists whose works have been commissioned for the Totally Babilicous! exhibition, which opens today at the SMU concourse.

Herman’s work strongly resembles contemporary street art despite the use of traditional images.  His use of spray paint and obvious admiration of fashion, give his work an edgy and modern feel. The melange of loud and varied colors on his canvases, is reflective of the diverse roots and rich heritage that defines Peranakan culture.  Says Herman: “In an era where borders are rendered futile in a fast paced and ever changing world, the fusion of different hues and tones in my work celebrate the adaptable and fluid nature of Peranakan culture.”

Totally Babilicous! The Peranakan Festival runs through 6 Dec at the SMU Concourse.

Spotted! Ang Song Nian

Senja Road

Ang Song Nian creates photographs that confront what we usually do not notice, places and spaces half-remembered, half forgotten; influenced and shaped by human presence. By framing particular and ordinary elements, he invites the observer to read the image, to engage in a progressive process of understanding the individual elements it contains and the connections between them. Intrigued by the narration of thoughts and ideologies through visuals, has always favoured a microscopic approach to concepts and narration, a style which he always employs to open up details in photography.

Currently based in London, Song Nian’s work questions the relationship of human interventions and invasions on landscapes. His works have been exhibited as part of several major events such as the Singapore Art Exhibition 2009, Singapore Arts Show 2005, Phillip-Morris Singapore Arts Award 2005, Student Creative Awards Showcase 2003, and the Nanyang Technological University Arts Festival 2007.

TACTILE

Tactile brings together 13 works by young artists from five junior colleges, in a showcase that explores the fascinating notion of the tactile. It is about getting excited over the play of light and reflection, the subtle textures of paper, fabric, rust, soot and other potential materials. The works centre around the process of learning and understanding through art-making, the act that brings forth forms to ideas and concepts so that they can be communicated across time and space. Outreach programmes: Artist Talk and Tour, 28 November  (1-2 pm) and 9 January 2010 (3-4 pm). Discussion Forum, ‘Partnership and Weaving: Facilitating the art-making process’ by experienced art teachers, 28 November (2.30-4.30 pm). Through 10 Jan 2010 at SAM at 8Q, 8 Queen Street. Spotted! Zak Yeo Zhixiong

Father and Son - $3000 w_o frame

Zak Yeo aka zyeo was born in 1984, and pursued a degree at Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. The subject matter of his work is often based on a satirical and self-mocking approach towards modern life. By translating his relationship with society into art, Zak hopes to be able to engage the viewers in constructing and projecting their narrative upon the painting.

“Spending the last 4 years working in London has been a great privilege and really opened me up as an artist as well as a person,” Zak explains. “Being brought up in Singapore, a place with strict codes and structures, London has definitely introduced and got me interested in many other working methodologies. Being blessed with this new knowledge, coming back home now puts me in an precarious but extremely exciting position questioning art and its functions.”
