Spotted! Danny Santos

I got an email from the talented Danny Santos last week telling me about his Flickr set featuring the beautiful people of Singapore.

Danny is a Graphic Designer who moved here from the Philippines. “I realized that Singapore is just a haven of photogenic subjects; from landscapes, to tourist spots, to cityscapes, and most of all, it’s people,” he says. “That’s when I realized I wanted to take candid shots of strangers walking the streets of Singapore. Orchard Road is the first place in Singapore that amazed me. It is a melting pot of interesting and beautiful people. I’m hoping to visually portray the beauty and energy you find along Orchard Road, especially on weekends.”

Check out some more photos on his Flickr page. Worth a click.

Nude & Print

nudeprint.png

From June 2nd until June 7th, 2902 Gallery presents ‘Nude & Print’, an exhibition initiated by a group of like-minded visual communication graduates from Temasek Poly, in an attempt to expose tactility in art and design. The exhibition will feature graphic design, illustration, photography and installation art.

Wanqi explains: “One reason why we wanted to do this show is  because we keep hearing that print won’t survive and we should move on to digital, which we totally disagree with. We don’t want the exhibition to be  just another Graduate show.  We want to show people our obsession and love for print. The Nude factor was added at a later stage.”

Explore this body of work on the bare essentials of print between 2 and 7 June at 2902 Gallery, Old School Mount Sophia Road. Opening Night : 2 June at 7.30pm. Admission is Free.

Spotted! Jason Siew

Malaysia-born Jason Siew is a freelance art director and designer residing in Singapore. “I grew up in a household where I was encouraged to draw,” Jason says. “I started drawing at a very young age and won my first award when I was nine. In the following years, I continued to learn and explore new ways of expressing myself artistically. I always think that the passion I have for drawing is the biggest gift from God.”

Jason studied art and design in Kuala Lumpur before moving to Singapore in 1998. “I began learning figure drawing at the end of 2003 under the tutelage of an outstanding local artists, Mr Namasivayam. I wanted to further my understanding of the human body in different styles and mediums. In 2005, I participated in a joined exhibition “Xposed 3”, which celebrated the human form in art. In 2006, I began freelancing as an art director in the advertising industry”

Jason about his work: “Strike-A-Pose” (above) is a watercolor of soul singer Erykah Badu. It’s a study work I did a few days ago, using blue and violet, after I saw Erykah’s photograph in an old magazine. I like to convert a photograph, an object, a scenery or a vision into a painting using different styles and mediums.”

The Draftmasters

The Draftmasters (Victor Adan and Jeff Snyder), perform live on hacked pen-plotter printers. Using the Manta interface, physical gestures become printer commands. Electromagnetic pickups attached to the printers turn their electrical fields into sound. Daniel Iglesia analyzes their video to create graphics for 3D glasses in real time.
