On March 18, Singapore artist Yeo Shih Yun and Danish artist Rune Søchting will present a screening of their very first artistic collaboration. During a short and intense collaboration, they have developed a piece based on the investigation of sound and the moving image. In the work they explore the intermediary space between visuality and aurality playing with the idea of the musical score not as a fixed set of symbols, but as a dynamic and chance-generating system. This will be a unique opportunity to experience the premier screening. 18 March, 4:30 pm at LASALLE, College of the Arts.

Yanny started drawing at a young age, using the living room walls as her canvas, doodling sketches of a charred Little Mermaid, stickmen family portraits with curly hair, houses on legs and images of Snoopy, her fantasy pet dog.
“I like comics especially, ever since rummaging through my brother’s old stack of Bookworm comics,” Yanny adds. “For a period of time, all I did was stay at home and draw comics of little kid gangs and their adventures, and showing them to my buddies on weekends. Art to me that time was something I considered as a hobby, something I did to make up for lack of a social life. Until polytechnic education year one, when my graphic design teacher told me to try my luck and submit some of my works to Noise Singapore. I never really thought of showing my drawings to other people, because I kept thinking they’d never be good enough. But nevertheless, I figured maybe I might get something out of it. Since then a lot of things happened, my works were given media attention, but my art being selected by NAC and exhibited in Tokyo was my proudest moment. My dad always joked, “After all the money I spent on paper, pens and paints … it finally paid off!” For now, I’m thinking of becoming a book illustrator… maybe a comic book artist. I don’t know. Let’s see how it goes.”

Well it’s no secret that I love photography. So as you might imagine, I was instantly transfixed with Ronald Leong’s work. Hauntingly perfect in composition, his Fibonacci Rorschach photographs tap at the theme of beauty, and contain enough complexity to allow viewers the freedom to interpret them like Rorschach inkblots.
“We commonly associate human beauty with the face,” Ronald explains. “By adding an essence of the unfamiliar to the face, it becomes something else. The emotional connection changes. People appreciate the face on a different level, stimulating an emotional, perhaps even primordial, reaction that I personally associate with a Rorschach inkblot, or the pattern on a moth’s wings.”
The up-close portraiture compels, because it begs you to look at the details. And yes I agree, the series would look way better on a gallery wall …. but until then, I suggest you click on the images above, lean closer, and detect the Fibonacci component.

Zhou is currently taking a diploma in Visual Communication. She is a young artist exploring the fields of graphic design, illustration and photography. Her unusual family background has groomed her into an artist with peculiar and extraordinary thoughts – which are then turned into images on paper. With a strong curiosity towards ancient history and culture, she often fuses art of different origins together to create her own style. Her work is inspired by oriental art from China and Japan, and is filled with details that combine historical traditions with the art of maximalism. “I feel that youths nowadays are forgetting their roots as the world is getting more globalised,” Zhou adds. “I hope to reach out to these people by spicing up traditional art with my own touch.”
