Alvin Tang was exposed to the world of visual arts at a young age, when his dad enrolled him for art classes. “I also remember flipping through my sister’s collection of fashion magazines and design books at home,” he adds. “I was lucky enough to be able to further my artistic interests after my national service at Queensland College of Art. During my time in Australia, I was exposed to a lot of different forms of artistic expressions by fellow artists and friends from all over the world. It was during that time that I started finding out and falling in love with artists like Jeff wall, Edward Hopper, Erwin Olaf, Caravagio and Wolfgang Tillmans.”

Alvin Tang’s commitment to narrative is often present in both his commercial and personal works. Elements of light flares and windows are also frequently used as metaphors for his characters in his ‘single-framed movies’. Like film-stills isolated from the cinematic flow, his oddly attractive images often give viewers an unsettling feeling.

Alvin about his work: “HEAD is a collaboration with Hooked Clothings. It is an exploration of the relationships between humans in our modern society. Through the integration of pop culture elements in the images, we have come out with a series of T-shirts featuring four different characters. The Bunny, The Diver, The Balloons and The Helmet.”

Limited runs available from The Black Market.
