Have you ever wondered how much work goes into the creation of your favorite game? We have too, which is why we approached 22-year old freelance flash game designer, Zi Jian about breaking down the making of a game for us. He was kind enough to explain the major steps behind games development.

But before letting us in on the design process, Zi Jian insists on giving us the definition of the word “game”. “I believe almost everyone has played games at some point. But have you ever really considered what it is about a game that makes it a game? Game design involves creating the rules and interaction that describe how a game should be played. It also involves making sure that the game described by these rules will be fun. But most of all, a game is something that involves “play”. I love playing games and that’s why I create them!”

You have a brilliant idea for a game? Well, this is your first step. Basically at this stage, you have to conceptualize the various aspects of your game like the storyline, the game play, the aim of the game and more. When creating a game, always keep in mind what “makes” a great game. This way you can stay on track and create an interactive and addictive game.

What do you do next? Designing a game is like building a house. What do you need? That‘s right, you need a blueprint! Now that you know what you want, you need a plan. There is quite a bit of detail going into the design of a game. Write down the requirements, for example, the graphics, the sounds, etc. Plan the execution and make a time-line. It is always good to spend more time planning as it will make the execution phase easier and better.

With your idea and plan in place, you can now start creating your game. Stick to your time-line and edit where necessary. And most of all, keep your passion burning! Depending on the scale of the game, the execution can take from a week to a few years to complete. Once the initial version of your game is done, you can start making improvements. Get some users to play your game and make sure you’re also part of the action! Collect feedback from the players and make improvements.

One last tip! Games reach a broad audience, and you cannot always please everyone … so use the feedback wisely!
