The Dada Record: Alvin Tan

I am Alvin Tan and I am part of :phunk studio, a creative collective that propagates a visual signature that seamlessly blends diverse influences into a singular creative thought that never fails to revive itself in the ever-fleeting world of art, design and culture. Our cross-disciplinary approach is best described as “an aesthetic collective consciousness” focused on experimenting with new approaches to visual expressions.

Japanese Gum (Dntel Remix) by Her Space Holiday
This is my favorite track from Her Space Holiday. The lyrics are lonely and poetic, it’s like listening to a diary. The melody on the Dntel mix is captivating but it is the static that makes this one a winner.

Are You The One (Simian Mobile Disco Mix) by The Presets
Sometimes loving a track has got a lot to do with it’s music video. For Are You The One, Kris Moyes did a fantastic job combining 80 kitsch, B-grade humor and lo-fidelity cool. The original track can get quite mono after a few loops but Simian Mobile Disco picked it up with electronic bleeps and glitches. A good mix to do your shuffle.

Fire in Cairo (Digitalism Remix) by The Cure and Digitalism
Goth-electro-indie-punk can’t get better than this. This track is numbingly addictive because Robert Smith goes “f-i-r-e-i-n-c-a-i-r-o” on repeat mode, sounding like a robot. The beeps are dirty and trashy, perfect for a drop at a warehouse gig.

La Ritournelle (Metronomy Mix) by Sebastien Tellier
I would have picked the original seven and a half min version if only I hadn’t looped it to death till I got sick of it. This mix is something refreshing. Metronomy gave it a synthesized bouncy rhythm which is very “xylophoned” and definitely a keeper on the dancefloor.

Sexual Healing by Hot Chip
I like synthesizers and Hot Chip seems to do it with immaculate style. Not easy when it comes to synthesizers and even harder when it comes to covering a classic soulful track. Sexual Healing by Hot Chip is easy on the ears and probably very good in bed too.
