The Dada Record: Unpopular Radio

Unpopular Radio is a 24-hour online radio station which plays music most would describe as Indie. It is a small pocketed media platform for a range of possible community agendas. The people who run the radio are mostly based in Singapore and sometimes Manila. There are usually live radio shows at night, and for the rest of the time, a loop of 69 songs are on rotation. Between a third to half of the play-list consists of bands from the southeast Asian region. Some of these live shows have been recorded and are available for download. The radio has existed for two years and runs on a different economic logic from the free market system.

PHILOSOPHY

I’m a graphic designer on weekdays, illustrator on weekends.

I like observing people; the way the wind catches the hair of long-haired women, and for a split second cover half their faces, the way the light bounces off their skin with each move they make, the way everyone finds their space in crowded chaotic places. I also imagine possible dialogues between total strangers and snigger to myself.

‘I Am David Sparkle’ to launch Debut LP

Ever since I first listened to I Am David Sparkle, I’ve been anxiously awaiting to hear news of their debut LP entitled, ‘This Is The New’. Especially after hearing last year’s ‘Apocalypse of Your Heart’ EP, which gave me a taste of the potential of what this instrumental and post-rock band is capable of. Amran explains, ‘Releasing a new record twelve months after ‘Apocalypse of Your Heart’ was a conscious decision. I guess the band is trying to catch up on lost time, as our first CD was put out only after having been around for five years- which is an awfully long time. I also think the band is in a phase where we would like to be more productive and have something to show for it, so I can definitely say that we don’t intend for ‘This Is The New’ to be the last of our efforts.” MORE »
