Le Monde Est A Nous: See You In The Dark…

Crow by Sokkuan

Organized by Night & Day, See You in the Dark is the second in a series of six “Le Monde est a Nous” exhibitions which will continue to take place between now and March 2008. Supporting local graphic artists since its conception, each month, Night & Day showcases the work of two emerging artists.

On view later this month, are new illustrations by Kuanth and Sokkuan. Both artists collaborated earlier on projects such as Nokia L’amour, Motorola online and the M1 Christmas Campaign. See you in the Dark is their latest endeavor. Says Kuanth “We are both very much attracted to things that are unusual and quirky with a good sense of humor. Darkness is a very powerful medium; it lets our imagination go very very far. That’s how we came up with the theme. And we also found it to fit the main theme of ‘Le Monde est a nous’ (The World is Ours).”

Infusing hand drawn and digital media in their work, each artist uniquely reflects their weirdest thoughts. Pulling inspiration from fantasy and imagination, Kuanth and Sokkuan created graphic images through illustrative imagery, unravelling a specific feeling of darkness. “It is hard to tell what inspires us, but I guess it came from bits and pieces we encounter everywhere. Be it from our daily life or from our journey, the books we read, the stories we hear or even the people we meet. That is how we give life and imagination to our work and to the characters we create.” says Sokkuan.

Kuanth has been a freelance illustrator since 2002 and his work can be seen in many local magazines and commercial projects. In 2006 he started his very own design platform, Mistake by Kuanth. Kuanth has been selected for the 2007 20/20 exhibition, a showcase of twenty of Singapore’s finest talents across different media and disciplines.

Sokkuan, a former art director for OgilvyOne Worldwide, has become as well known for her covers of GLAM Fashion Magazine as for her illustration work for clients like Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Heineken, Coca-cola, Pepsi and more. Earlier this year, Sokkuan was selected as one of the 75 Tiger’s Asian Kinetic Artists across Asia-Pacific for the Tiger Translate campaign.

The exhibition runs between 22 September and 20 October at Night & Day Gallery, 139 Selegie Road.
